King cake is a delicious blend of coffee cake and cinnamon roll and has long been associated with Mardi Gras (hence the yellow, green, and purple sanding sugars). The name “king cake” comes from the story of the three kings who bring gifts to Baby Jesus. A tiny plastic baby is hidden inside the cake and tradition dictates that whoever finds it must either bring the next cake or throw a party – creating an unending round of food and fun.
